1. I love the oncology floor. The patients are the most pleasant thus far, and they love me because I come in and offer to order them more milkshakes and ice cream. Most of them are 70+ and have accepted their diagnoses, so they are, in general, calm, relaxed, serene individuals.
2. Conferencing with a 25 year old who has made several trips in the past 10 years to Duke for chemo treatments, on the other hand, is not so pleasant. It is difficult for me to imagine myself in their shoes. Scary, frankly.
3. I navigated the adult psych floor and met with a bipolar, anorexic mother several times last week. No fainting. Only gentle conversation and tag team menu completions. SUCCESS.
4. I shadowed an SLP while he performed a few bedside swallows, and I anticipate watching a barium swallow within the next day or two. All the nurses love this guy. He told me that once Mission gets up to 900 beds and acquires its own zip code, he's going to run for hospital mayor. I bet he'd win--all the nurses love to touch his shoulders and say hello while we were in the stations.
5. I attended ICU rounds today. Wasn't able to contribute anything but it sure was useful to hear their discussions when collecting data for my day's patient visits!
6. Saw a blood glucose in the 600s today. Its no 1200 as mentioned earlier but its the highest I've ever seen. I believe that this patient was also an alcoholic.
