Today was a busy day. I saw 5 patients alone, watched a FEES, then found my case study patient and performed an assessment on her. I also talked with a dietitian about my in-service project, wrote my notes, and recorded some new competencies. I like the busy days though. I figure life is more exciting that way!
The FEES was fairly uneventful. It was performed on an older man in the ICU who presented with dysphagia. However, he completed the study perfectly. The intern and I were joking about wanting to see a person aspirate. Not really a funny joke, but also a learning experience. After the FEES I visited my case study patient. She is an interesting case with a history of a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. She has a perforated ulcer and is in the ICU at the moment. I am excited about monitoring her progress. The other patients I saw today were nothing too out of the ordinary. I saw a few tube feeding patients, performed some follow-ups and completed a diabetes diet education (again... man, there are a lot of people with diabetes).
Anyhow, I am enjoying the internship. Tomorrow I will start my site project -- analyzing data from a pediatric nutrition study. Looking forward to all that is in store.
