More GI and Cardiac

Today concluded my rotation with GI, and tomorrow I spend the day with the TPN pharmacist. I am looking forward to understanding that aspect of nutrition that dietitians so rarely observe. Today I saw all GI patients. I also spent time reviewing various diets and discussing questions with the dietitian -- low residue, low fat, ileostomy diets, post gastrectomy, etc. Nothing too exciting... however, I always feel like I learn something new with each patient though... a different way to chart, a different diet, an alternative supplement or TF formula, NCP, etc. For those of you who have not completed your GI rotation, I would definitely recommend knowing where nutrients are absorbed in the digestive system and various surgical procedures associated with this system. I think knowing that informatin was the most beneficial for understanding what was going on with each patient and then establishing their respective MNTs.

I also worked on the pediatric diet menu today. I have loved working on this project. For me, it is like a puzzle -- finding foods that match the wide range of carb numbers. It is definitely a long process. I think the most frustrating aspect has been finding foods that are kid-friendly, diabetic friendly and available at the hospital. I feel very limited in my options and the menus seem somewhat repetitive. Today I finally received an "alternative food" list and look forward to making some adjustments on my previously planned menus.

Hope all is well!
