Word got around that I can "interpret" Spanish, so I got called today by one of our R.D.'s in radiation to come over and help her with an education on a lovely Hispanic woman. We needed to talk with her about the secondary effects of her newest radiation treatment for her cervical cancer (she was already undergoing chemotherapy): cylindrical radiation. I haven't yet completed my oncology module, but from what I understand, the treatment involves inserting a cylinder into the pts vagina, much like a tampon, which allows for a concentrated dose of radiation to permeate the area. As a result, we needed to warn the pt to expect diarrhea and possibly nausea. The only spanish handout the unit had was from 1987, so we used that and our English handout to make sure we covered the basics. The nurse ended up coming into the room too, so I was interpreting for her...until she started talking about anatomy, and I couldn't for the life of me think of what the word "bladder" was in Spanish. In case anyone was wondering, it's "vejiga". Anyway, I seriously need to step up my game in spanish: hospital and anatomy vocab. And my special project just may turn out to be translating oncology diet education materials into Spanish (as per the request of this particular R.D.).
I observe CABG surgery tommorrow! Probably my last surgery to observe :( I'll let you guys know how it goes!
