Almost...

I almost got to put my newly semi-learned Spanish skills to work yesterday. A little Spanish-speaking lady was in the Cardiac ICU, and there was no phone translation service available, so I printed off a Spanish version of heart-healthy cooking tips from the Nutrition Care Manual (great Spanish resources by the way), and I wrote up a little paragraph to tell her who I was, that I don't speak a lot of Spanish, but here is a handout that she can read. However, I had just entered her room when her granddaughter came in (who was in her 20s and spoke English), so my little paragraph was unnecessary :( Oh well. Next time.

Also, I went to an 8 hour diabetes class for nurses today. John, the RD I worked with last week at the Diabetes Center, had invited me to go, so I went. A nurse practitioner, Wanetta, a tall, older, red-headed Southern lady, taught the class. Here is a quote from her that was somewhat hilarious and a bit incorrect, but I suppose helpful, as she was explaining why we shouldn't eat solid butters or margarines, "Do you see how hard that butter on the table is? I don't know many of us who are walking around as hot as the top of our stoves, so that butter doesn't stay melted inside of us. It just gets all hard. Clogs our arteries." Thank you for the illustration Wanetta. I don't think that applies to us though. We're all pretty good-lookin' ladies :)
