Like Elizabeth, I also had the opportunity to observe a PEG placement this week. And better yet, I did not pass out! That is a CRAZY, crazy procedure. Having not spent much time in hospitals from the care-giving side of things, I thought watching the tube move through the GI tract on the screen was incredibly fascinating. The assistant had some trouble breaking through to the stomach from the outside, so the whole procedure maybe took 10 minutes instead of the usual 7 minutes. It blew my mind how fast they were in and out, tube placed, and patient wheeled back to their room. Like I said, crazy! Upon inquiring, I learned that if the PEG is temporary, the physician (or nurse) can just pull it out on the spot. He/she simply gives it a good yank! The hole heals within an hour or two, and the patient can start eating as soon as they get home. Unbelievable!
That pretty much rocked my world this week. Hope everyone else had a good one!
