Wakemed Week 3—
I started renal this week. Unfortunately, there are not many renal patients; instead, I am staying in so called “stepdown” floor which I still not quite understand what is actually mean? I have seen a lot of tube feeding, and it is a wonderful experience. I did have a great opportunity to learn, to practice how to prescribe tube feed, follow up, and evaluate patients. I had a chance to watch PEG placement one time, actually, it was not complete procedure since patient had food in stomach, and doctor could do it at that time. It was not comfortable experience, because I kind of felt patient’s pain, even I know this will benefit for long time feeding, still it is hard for me to accept this procedure.
Last Friday, I did one education to patient and his wife on heart healthy diet. They expressed their interests on this topic and want to change their eating behavior to achieve weight loss. They asked so many questions and I have to go through all detailed information for them (handout book), it lasted almost 35 minutes! At end, they told me “it makes sense and they want to make change” It means a lot for me to earn patient’s comments!
Next week I will go to CCU for more practice of tube feeding even possible of TPN, I am so excited!
