In the little town of Shelby...

My first week at CRMC in Shelby was definitely interesting.  I did a lot of shadowing and observing for my first few days.  They are also in the process of moving completely to electronic charting.  Lucky for me, the dietitians have already switched over.  I don't really have rotations but it seems that most of the patients at CRMC have multiple disease states anyway.  By the end of the week, the dietitian I was working with had me estimating needs and practicing notes in the computer system.  I also helped calculate a few TPNs and have been getting familiar with all of the TFs and supplements that the hospital offers.

They have a really great diabetes center there at the hospital where I was able to sit in for a nutrition class one night.  They actually have 4 CDE's on staff which is pretty amazing especially for a hospital their size.  It was very neat to see the class and compare it to the DSME curriculum that Bridget and I helped implement at Guilford County Public Health Department for our concurrent field experience.  Hopefully I'll get to spend more time up there since I have a big interest in DM.

Oh, and funny story.  On Thursday when I went to the diabetes clinic for the first time I met all of their staff.  Within the first five seconds of meeting one of the CDE's who is also an RN, she grabbed my hand and asked me if I was Hispanic.  When I told her that I was she proceeded to tell me that she thinks I have acanthosis on my hands and then lifted up my hair to look on my neck for it.  Needless to say, she didn't find anything. (I'm pretty sure its just my natural skin color).  The clinical dietitian who was introducing us was pretty appalled at the entire situation.  Anyways, there are some pretty interesting people in Shelby.  Hope everyone else had a good week!
