Hello my friends!
So, yesterday was my first day at Cape Fear Valley, but I couldn't do a whole lot because the online orientation program was not working... so I just met everyone in the department, looked around the kitchen, and asked questions about how everything worked in the hospital. I was sad to learn that though CFV has both a NICU and a PICU, the RDs only work in the PICU because everything in the NICU is done electronically (the formulas and everything for dosing, etc. are already programmed into the computer, so the doctors just put in the baby's ht and wt and get recommendations), and also the primary RD who worked with Peds just moved away, so I will be learning about Peds at the same time as my preceptor Darcy (who will be in charge of that rotation for me). I will also be learning about the NCP at the same time because CMV is in the midst of transitioning from SOAP notes to the NCP. So a learning experience for all is in store.
Today I completed orientation finally and got to go up on the cardiology floor with Darcy to learn about assessment and writing notes. I spent most of my time, however, with the outpt RD, Casie, who does cardiac rehab counseling, and I got to counsel my first pt today. Tomorrow I will be teaching a class about healthy cooking and also observing a cardiac cath procedure, so it should be an interesting day!
A final note, 3 of the RDs are runners, and they have their own little running club every week, so I was invited to join this Thursday! One of them is training for a marathon, so I feel right at home :)
Have a great evening everyone!
