I love CMC Union so far! It's a pretty small hospital - 160 beds in the actual hospital, plus some in cardiac rehab and a long term care facility. All the doctors, nurses, social workers, etc seem to know each other, which is nice. Everyone I have met so far has been very nice. Yesterday I mostly shadowed a dietitian. She showed me how she looks at her list of patients, chooses one to visit, and then documents what she does in their chart system. The hospital has a somewhat confusing chart system as they have both an online and paper chart. The RD's work mostly with the online chart, but a little with the paper charts. They seem to use something similar to the nutrition care process but do not use any codes like what we learned. They also just switched the looks of their computer system last week, so I think it's even a little confusing for the dietitian I was shadowing. Hopefully we'll both figure it out soon :) I didn't do much besides shadowing yesterday, but I did help out with a PES statement on coumadin/vitamin K education.
Today I did more shadowing, but I also listened to a teleconference on food allergies (I think I read that somebody else heard the same thing!). I also sat in on the interdisciplinary plan of care meeting that a social worker, physician, pharmD, and dietitian sit in on once or twice a week. They go (rapidly) through each patient in their floor, I guess just to make sure everyone is on the same page. Since it's a small hospital it only took about an hour to go through each patient. I thought that this was a great way to encourage the different disciplines to work together.
