Yesterday was my first day at Johnston Memorial in Smithfield. My first impression of the area and the hospital are that it is small, rural town. There are 3 full time dietitians on staff currently and much of their time is spent between in patient, out patient as well as a cardiac and diabetes classes.
The hospital itself is extremely small but they are currently in the process of expanding and just changed management. Many of the facilities are extremely small and have not been update since the 50s. However, all of the charting is done on the computer which did come as somewhat of a surprise to me.
For my first day, I got to watch as the speech therapist performed a swallow test on one of the patients and that was promptly followed up by the patient throwing up. So for future reference dont stand to close to patients when that is going on. Needless to say my first day was interesting.
I will be shadowing all three dietitians and will not have set rotations. I will just be seeing any cases that I can pretty much get my hands on. I did start seeing patients with the dietitians and also attempted charting and assessments.
One advantage to being in such a small hospital is that they are going to allow me to sit in on a number of procedures.
I do have a question for any of those out there who may have suggestions. For the diabetes class they do have good handouts for the participants so if anyone has any suggestions for great, helpful handouts that are in both english and spanish I could really use some feedback. Thanks! Have a good first week.
