Pinehurst looks like it's going to be good times.
My preceptor, Meg, at Moore is wonderful. After a few hours of orientation in the H.R. office, she took me on a brief tour of the hospital and food service department. I got my official employee badge complete with picture and followed her around in true internship fashion as she introduced me to her coworkers. Meg oversees all the inpatient dietitians in the hospital and seems to be well-liked. I was actually really looking forward to having lunch with her, and after checking in with her superior we found out that I get free food privileges at the cafeteria!
Unfortunately, I didn't get to interact with any patients today; Meg informed me that I'll be working closely with the dietitians this week. I won't have formal rotations here at Moore either (like some of you out there), so there will be a lot of overlap between the modules I complete (and I will be doing all of them) and what I'll get to see everyday. I was especially excited to hear that the R.D.'s prescribe their own diet orders without an M.D. having to sign off on it.
Tomorrow will be a long day, but I'm looking forward to it. Meg works closely with the Wellness Center at Moore and they're hosting an "Iron Chef" event at the local community college for the public (to promote F&V consumption). Two local restaurant chefs were invited to come along and participate. They'll each bring their crew and they're required to cook food for 50 people. The "audience" in attendance will judge the best entree, appetizer and dessert (the chefs have to make two of these three). We're providing the chefs with a plethora of locally grown produce, and the secret ingredients: eggplant and granny smith apples. It's going to be interesting! Meg was laughing all afternoon about whether she was going to be able to pull this off. I'm bringing my camera. :)
